A box with eight cameras sounds reassuring. But eight poorly positioned cameras can still miss the one detail you need. The better starting point is a simple question: what should a recording help you understand?
Give every camera a job
Write down the purpose of each view before choosing equipment. The front entrance might need to show a person approaching the door. A driveway view might need to show vehicle movement. A broad garden view might simply provide context. These are different tasks and they do not automatically need the same lens or position.
For a villa, start with a sketch of gates, doors, side passages and accessible boundaries. For a shop, sketch customer entrances, stock access and the route between them. Mark obstructions such as columns, planting, parked vehicles and shelving. A camera cannot see through any of them.
Walk the route at the right time
A view that looks excellent at midday can struggle after sunset. Bright entrance lights, reflective paving and headlights can change what the camera sees. Look at each proposed position in the conditions that matter to you. Where possible, test a camera before fixing its final angle.
Separate detail from context
A wide view is useful for understanding movement through a space. It may not provide enough detail to identify someone far away. Instead of expecting one camera to do everything, decide where detail is needed and where context is enough. This often produces a more sensible layout than adding cameras without a plan.
Think about privacy while drawing the plan
Keep the camera’s field of view focused on your authorised space. Neighbouring windows, private areas and communal corridors deserve careful consideration. Discuss building permissions and applicable site requirements before installation. Privacy masks may help in some situations, but camera positioning remains the first decision.
Check the system behind the picture
Coverage also depends on recording. Check storage, recording schedules, timestamps and access permissions. A strong picture is of little use if the recorder is not saving it or nobody knows how to find it.
